Kimberley

A good place to be.

Kimberley is no stranger to innovation. Though once one of Canada’s most prolific mining communities, locals foretold the need for diversification. And so the community conspired to foster a bustling tourism industry founded upon a theme: the Bavarian City of the Rockies. Today the mine has closed, the locals wear less lederhosen, and the provincial government has bestowed the community with a resort municipality designation. The community possesses many highly desirable attributes. It was challenged, however, on how best to articulate their story in a manner that resonated with existing businesses and residents, while simultaneously attracting diverse new guests, residents, and businesses. 

In an unprecedented manner, Story & Co. worked extensively with the City, the Chamber of Commerce, and Tourism Kimberley to establish communication tools and guidelines that would allow for consistency and continuity across multiple sectors and work for multiple audiences.  

Story & Co. facilitated brand information sessions, hosted community conversations, liaised with media and partner organizations, reviewed studies and surveys, and engaged the community.

The resulting communication tools and guidelines establish a solid foundation for a community with a proud tradition of not simply awaiting their future, but working together to create the future they deserve.

Kimberley is a decidedly humble community. It’s not simply a resort community, it’s more of a community with a resort. Though many communities strive for hyperbole, Kimberley is decidedly more content to be known as “A good place to be.” The community clearly expressed it would much rather understate and exceed expectations than set a standard that might deliver less than perfect results.

Economic development initiatives often forget that innovators are people, not just business entities. That those who innovate or do new things are the decidedly unconventional. If there’s one thing the decidedly unconventional often have in common, it’s appreciation for others who are decidedly unconventional. Fortunately, there’s more than a little innovation and unconventionalism tooling about the streets of Kimberley.
